2006 AWARDSAWARDSREID ArchitectureAir Traffic Control Tower, Edinburgh Airport Putting an industrial object into the landscape is never an easy thing to do - but when it is an Air Traffic Control tower - the restrictions are huge. ATC towers consist of three main elements - base building, stem and visual control room. The design avoids the stereotypical approach of expressing these elements separately and combines them as a singular form, but still retains the functional, machine - like qualities that make this building type unique. The zinc shingle skin is exquisitely detailed down to the last vent. |
