2007 AWARDSAWARDS - Leisure/RetailBuilding Design PartnershipNew Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick, Shetland for the Shetland Amenity Trust New Shetland Museum and Archives is a unique integration of the Island's Museum and Archives displaying 3000 artefacts from its extensive collection and providing documents going back to the 5th century. The judges admired the architects' bold juxtaposition of traditional forms and iconic structures whilst using traditional materials to deal with the extreme maritime climate. The triple height timber clad Boat Hall is beautifully detailed to create a stunning volume for the outstanding collection of historic boats. The museum is already having a regenerative impact on the immediate area with work underway on adjacent music and cinema venues. |
