2007 AWARDSAWARDS - Leisure/RetailARP LorimerCatStrand Arts Centre, New Galloway for the Glenkens Community and Arts Trust The CatStrand Arts Centre sits in the High Street of New Galloway in what was the listed 19th century former Kells School. The project provides a multifunctional facility which incorporates a series of artworks in the design. The judges praised this multi - purpose community building designed to promote local arts and artists in New Galloway. The centre makes use of a disused school building, with the new and old linked by a glazed corridor under which runs the culverted Cat Strand Burn. Much use is made of ceramic tiles made by Will Marshall, a client for one of last years awards. The project is full of delight - a blend of restoration, sustainability, interior design and collaboration - a superb facility for the people of New Galloway.
