2009 AWARD WINNERS

The 2009 GIA Awards were announced by GIA President Martin McKay on Friday 13 November following the 142nd GIA Annual Dinner at Oran Mor, Glasgow.

The judging panel consisted of:

  1. Martin McKay, GIA President
  2. David Dunbar, RIAS President
  3. Professor Gerry Grams, City Design Leader, Glasgow
  4. Alan Hooper, Stage 3 Leader, Glasgow School of Art
  5. Dr. Ombretta Romice, Senior Lecturer, Strathclyde University
  6. Neil Gillespie, Reiach and Hall
  7. James Tait

81 sumbissions were received for the awards, and a total of 8 Commendations and 12 Awards were presented in the following 9 categories:

  1. Residential
  2. Office/Commercial + Industrial
  3. Leisure + Retail
  4. Healthcare
  5. Education
  6. Conservation
  7. Small Works (under £250,000)
  8. Small Practice (less than five architects)
  9. Sustainability

In addition to the above awards, The GIA Supreme Award, was also announced. The Supreme Award, inaugurated in 2007, can be awarded for a specific building, a body of work or for an outstanding contribution to the GIA.

SUPREME AWARDS

The judges decided to award the GIA Supreme Award to a building and also to an individual.

Small Animal Hosptial, Garscube for The University of Glasgow

In the company of very stiff competition there was one building whose regenerative impact, innovative design and elegance of detailing stood out for the judges, who found the environment created by the project a hugely uplifting experience, an outstanding achievement in every respect.

It was also decided that a second award would be presented to an individual for their outstanding contribution to the GIA.

Dr. Joyce B. Deans, CBE

Joyce was the first femail President of both the GIA and RIAS, The award was presented in recognition of her dedicated hard work on behalf of both the GIA and the RIAS over many years.
